However, you can narrow things down by determining how much you can afford, level of durability and the style of lock you want. Durability will undoubtedly be one of the most important factors to consider. When your lock isn’t durable, what is the point in having one at all. In order to determine the level of durability a lock has, you can take note of the durability grading system. This enables you to find the level of durability a particular lock offers based on this type of grading system. We have compiled some information about this grading system that will be helpful in helping you find the right residential or commercial lock.

Lock Grading System

ANSI (American National Standards Institute) has developed three grades for door locks. They indicate the locks level of durability and the quality of the lock. The grading system is also offered for deadbolt locks. They pass a series of testing, which includes, weight tests, cycles and door strikes. A cycle is done once you turn the door-knob and it has made contact with the door latch bolt to open the door and close it again. A Grade 1 lock is considered to be the best grade for a residential door lock.

Lock Grades

Grade 1 Locks

When considering a deadbolt lock for your home, consider using a Grade 1 deadbolt lock. It is the highest grade for residential deadbolt locks and for commercial building locks. The only commercial lock that receives a Grade 1 certification is the lever handle lock. They have been able to withstand 800,000 cycles and as many as 6 door strikes. They also pass the 360 lb. weight test. With the residential deadbolt it has to offer at least 10 door strikes and withstand up to 250,000 cycles.

Grade 2 Locks

This type of lock is often utilized for light commercial buildings. They must be able to withstand up to 400,000 cycles and provide at least 4 door strikes and pass a 250 lb. weight test. The deadbolt lock must endure 5 door strikes and 150,000 cycles.

Grade 3 Locks

These are not the best locks to use for home locks, although, this is what they are generally used for. They are able to endure up to 200,000 cycles and pass a 150 lb. weigh test and 2 door strikes.  This grade offers the least amount of durability. You might want to remember this when looking for the most durable residential locks.

Our society has become dependent on modern conveniences now more than ever. With the increasing advances in technology, it is no wonder door locks have become even more technologically advanced. There are Bluetooth-enabled tools, which easily unlock or lock doors without a key. There are also fingerprint recognition tools used to identify the person who has permission to enter a specific area of a commercial business. These types of locks are considered high-security locks and are used most often in commercial businesses for convenience and maximum security.

5 Durable Locks

  1. Digital or Smart Locks

Since we all tend to gravitate toward the things that offer us the greatest level of convenience, it isn’t hard to understand why we might be drawn to digital or smart locks. In addition to offering you the convenience you may be seeking, these locks are said to be high-security locks, usually used for commercial use to offer maximum security. These locks offer the convenience of fingerprint recognition, which identifies the person who has the authority to enter a secure area. There are also Bluetooth enabled devices, which allow you to unlock or lock a door without the use of a physical key.

  1. Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt locks are used for commercial and residential use due to their level of durability. Deadbolt locks are offered as a single-cylinder lock or double-cylinder lock. A single-cylinder opens the door from the outside and has a turn button on the other side. The double-cylinder opens from both sides, with a key. Most homeowner opt for the single-cylinder lock since the double-cylinder requires a key in order to open it. This can be dangerous if there is a fire and the key cannot be located.

  1. Keyless Locks

Since you do not have to have a key to open the area you are trying to obtain access into, this is a convenient alternative to having a standard lock. It is designed with an anti-theft code. The same code cannot be repeated. If a code is entered into the system too often, an alarm will sound. This is an extra layer of security to warn of possible intrusion.

  1. Mortise Locks

These types of locks are primarily found on home doors. This lockset has faceplates that include the doors knob and keyhole. It can be opened from both sides if the outside lock isn’t locked. The deadbolt lock will only work if the inside knob is turned.

  1. Locksets

This type of lock is usually used in addition to a deadbolt lock. They are generally found in the entryways of homes. They have two doorknobs that are locked from either side. You can push a button on the lock to lock it and then to unlock it, just turn the knob.

In order to obtain the best type of lock, you will need to know what type of security you desire for each location you would like to secure. When you can clearly acknowledge what your needs are, a professional locksmith will be more effective in their efforts of offering you the lock with the level of durability that you’ll require. IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A GUN SAFE

If you own firearms, you need a gun safe! There are distinct advantages and disadvantages involved so before you spend money on one it’s best to do your homework first! Read this post carefully as it will help set you on the right direction before you make this investment. Here in Johns Creek, GA many residents have weapons at home. The object of this post is not to debate the rights of the gun owner but to educate you on how best to store and protect your weapons while still having ready access to them when needed. Also, safety of your loved ones including children, family members, pets and guests is important so always keep this in mind when doing your gun safe homework.

WHAT IS A GUN SAFE?

Gun safes are also known as gun cabinets and are specialized locking wood or metal compartments where your weapons can be kept safe. Safe from whom you might be wondering. Safe from everyone is the right answer. Every year accidents occur at home when children shoot themselves or others while playing with a loaded, accessible firearm. Adults too can be injured or killed by having easy access to these weapons. Domestic problems, home invasions, robbery attempts and even drinking games can get out of hand with tragic results when a loaded firearm is nearby and easily accessible. We’ve all heard stories of people who kept loaded guns in the closet, under the bed or behind the door thinking that no one ever looks there. All you need is to be wrong once and tragedy can occur.

GUN SAFES ALSO PROTECT YOUR GUNS!

It’s a fact. A good gun safe helps protect your weapons from unwarranted use and theft but also from weather, floods, fire and moisture that can cause rust, scratches, dust and other harm. Plus, there’s nothing preventing you from using your gun safe to secure other items like cash, jewelry, documents, art, family heirlooms, flash drives, photos, mementos and anything else of value that needs protection or safekeeping. Here in Johns Creek, GA we have high humidity and heat much of the time. A proper gun safe can help secure our handguns and other weapons from moisture and rust while still giving us fast access to them when needed.

WHAT IF I NEED MY GUNS IN A HURRY?

Here at Johns Creek 24/7 Locksmith we hear that question a lot. The perception can be that if your weapons are secured in a locked safe or cabinet then you won’t have sufficient time to access them in the case of a break-in, home invasion or other sudden emergency situation. Imagine the scenario; a stranger breaks into your home and after hearing the sound of breaking glass you hear the footsteps approaching your bedroom or your children’s room. Where are your keys to the gun safe? What is the combination to the lock? With all this stress you have forgotten it! Your guns are safe but are you?

Don’t let the above scenario scare you. Johns Creek 24/7 Locksmith offers easy and very affordable solutions to this dilemma. We’ll discuss these options in a moment but first know that you can always have lightning fast access to your weapons when and if you should need them!

Take into account options like extra keys, fireproofing, warranties and product guarantees.

DIVERSION GUN SAFES

Just like the name implies, these latest models are actually in plain view but hidden from obvious notice by anyone not looking for them. Diversion safes are built in to the wall, ceiling, bookcase, stairs and even the furniture. They are hard to spot since they are not in plain view and they don’t look like the traditional gun cabinet of the past. They also don’t have huge metal doors with complicated locks to access first before you can get to your guns. Close access in the bedroom or family room and disguised concealment offer advantages over the ponderous, heavy duty gun safes that are more traditional. Someone breaking into your home would never think to look in these concealed places and since they are almost always in a hurry to steal and get out, they won’t think to look for them either.
